I would lik eto know about what are the best plots/RPing you've seen in Shadowgate history pulled off by the players. The kind of stuff you wish still happened today. I'm hoping that it will give inspiration and maybe knowledge on how to do various things.

I don't have any examples myself.

We had some great ones back in the day, while I was down player-side... one was run by Torm or Helm or someone of that inclination, had the spirit of a long-lost character possess mine at random points and go kinda crazy til it got purged, which was fun. & another one, not sure who ran it, but they basically had an ally's long-lost evil brother reappear and polymorph my goodly character at the time into a beast race, and then I had to figure out how to convince my allies to not kill me and turn me back. I might've sucked at PK but I got really good at running away... language barriers were a lot more difficult back then too Razz

I've seen some brilliant ones run while I've been imm-side as well, but I guess they stand out more personally when you get to do something fun yourself Smile

I remember when we both were new to the game and playing, Nienne's character and mine being locked in the Shadow jail for DAYS together (yes, real life days), and an evil anti paladin would come in and regularly beat/torture us with her presence. (Shadow was run by a bunch of evil characters that exploited the law regularly)

There was also a time my characters arch nemesis got the bright idea to try and use sorcery and divine intervention from his goddess to cast a spell on my priest to make her believe that she was a priestess of the opposing faith, which worked out great until, as his priest, she booted her arch nemesis out of his own temple.

My first dragon encounter was avatar run, and it was tough! Our characters danced in the streets after defeating it (and this took a couple of weeks to complete)

There used to be a lot of corruption/attempts at corruption, kidnapping and holding people hostage (not just the hit and kill that we've got happening now), torture and release, etc.

My ability to think about everything else you said was lost when you said you had a many weeks long battle. How was that pulled off? Was it just running away a lot or?

Some of the more interesting plots I've ever been a part of had to do with trying to convert people of different faiths/alignments. Subterfuge and trickery and manipulation and bribery and etc. Trying to sway enemies to do things for you without actually killing them takes a lot more work. Even more when they have no idea that it's happening.

I remember Dithas and Jimi talking about how some people would get 'converted' to a different faith every few weeks as once they converted others started working on them trying to convert them as well.

I remember a couple of different plots that I had a lot of fun watching/participating.

I remember one was a trial of Ulfang in Daggerdale with Harrison presiding over the
trial. The other was when Daggerdale got destroyed by Drow when Kiervalan turned
into a werewolf (did N run that one? It was fun!). Harrison's dead body is still there with
his Sheriff badge.

Lurue was one of my favorite storytellers -- I especially liked her Quicksilver dragon NPC.
Cyric was also a lot of fun, I had a riding wolf that he took over and RP'd with me finding
a dagger in a the river outside Tabor Smile

Theres a crap ton of plots over the years that I had a lot of fun with -- Ibby, Tiamat, Ts, N,
Lue, and I'm sure i'm forgetting many others Smile

Lurue was the bestest!

My favorite plots I was a player in were Silvanus' way back in the day. The original Elfshine plot they ran was the reason I wanted to become an immortal.

My favorite plot I ran was the conductor.. Which provided me some NPCs that still come out to play (Raccoon and Father Belanos specifically) and some great long lasting memories.

What about those plots made them your favorite? And it seems there aren't any players with favorite plots.

Well you remember.. I was a player before I was an avatar, before I was a wizard ;p

What made the plots great was that everyone found a reason to constantly try new things, think about things. When the immortals were gone the players kept at it, discussed back stabbed, negotiated.. The avatar being around just meant that new information could be clarified. Therefore while the avatar was providing the frame work, the plots ended up being owned by the players

I can think of numerous plots that were fun from my 15 years on SG. I guess the ones that I enjoyed the most was with Alzar during his early days from 15-25ish. I truly enjoyed playing Alzar when he was trying to convert Saqira, Amarina, Dorje, Krusk all at the same time. It was fun, because each person had different obstacles to overcome. I knew that I won't convert all of them and even if I did that it would be some kind of "mole". I think in some regards Alzar himself knew this too. I remember one scene, which had none of those people being converted involved.

I was standing in Amarina's garden waiting for Azalon who I had requested a meeting with or he had with me. We were discussing stuff and I had a spell up that could detect scrying. The spell got lucky and went off, which showed me that Ramius was watching. I remember thinking, this is awesome and totally had me nervous. I waved at the sky and had Alzar chuckle as he asked Azalon if he was intimidated by a fledgling priest of Cyric. I remember Ramius commenting on how I was cracking him up OOC with the waving and he couldn't RP Razz. It was awesome, because I was being told how much fun fellow players were having with my RP and how awesome the concept I had created. I guess, from my perspective I play for other players as much as I do myself. I want others to have fun, because when they have fun I truly have fun, because they are more creative, more open to bad situations. I had no issues when Azalon and Ramius tore me apart.. I really thought it was fitting. I feel like people lose something when the game becomes about power, which 99 percent of the time it always happens. I let it happen with Alzar, others have let it happen.. Nightfall, Belen, Zeal, Aramel.. Every well-knwon character I can think of had a period where they lost the focus on RP and it became all about mechanics and new equipment or slaying person after person.

I truly believe in some ways that people forgetting who murdered them hurts the RP, but on other hands it helps too. I don't like what happens when people can kill people from 40 to 1.. I don't like that some wars never stop without the memory loss, but I also dislike that the rivalries are tempered compared to what they used to be. IMO the greatest Rivalry on the mud ever is Nightfall Vs Shrydelhi/Zeal/Ramius.. I remember all four of them doing so much against each other and though Shry was at the center of it, it truly was the most unbelievable rivalry. I remember my elf getting killed numerous times, because of others trying to fight a 50th level f/m/t.. I think Azalon and Alzar had a great rivalry and that is why I'm a super fan of Azalon. I felt like I could do any RP to him and the player would go along with it, if it was mature RP and not this stick comedy stuff. I tend to find it also bothers me that people group together and we can't balance alignments. We used to be evil heavy, but with a good enough mix of good that they could survive. I feel now that people play to be buddies with their favorite players, I adore RPing with certain people, but I can't buddies all day long.

Lastly, I tend to find Verbannon from conversations with two players OOC that I enjoy the game more when I find other concepts that are better than my own and motivate me to do better. Dorje and Azalon did this for me with Alzar. If neither of those concepts had existed, Alzar would be nothing.. I wanted to prove that I could RP on their level, that I could be as influential, as creative and make the world come alive. For me, it rarely has had to do with avatars, they are just icing on the cake for me. I haven't even been in a major plot, star of a big plot that had a full time avatar.. All of Alzar's star moments were where Tsera or Nienne gave me some leash and said go have fun, because they were spread so thin. I don't think avatars are needed to make the game fun, they just make it more interesting.

On a side note. I want to thank Loki for all the awesome stories over the years, I have seen three super awesome story tellers in my days on SG. Lurue, Silvanus, Loki and Nienne, I guess four.. You four are at the pinnacle of story telling. Myrkul I want to thank you for remembering to keep stuff small and doing stuff when no one else would, you excel so much at random encounters that it truly blows my mind. I hope you expand on the story-telling of this political plot you're doing, it looks super AWESOME!

That plot was the best. Anyone who frequented tharis had a chance to get involved. I remember one of the lathanderites ended up with the elfshine and a shadow monster came and kicked all our asses. She ended up getting captured and had to make a shady deal with an evil to rescue her.

There was an interesting dynamic later on with a number of active mystrians. It was really cool watching trevize come back and get knighted by the church. Having lliira, renicus and kirin around made for an interesting dynamic.

Also, way before then, a character named tarot set a great example for everyone she interacted with. It really opened my eyes about the importance of incorporating stuff like faith, and racial prejudice into one's roleplay.

Also, one time there was a high level evil that liked to psycho kill all around shadow. Even characters less than half his level. Eventually imms made an uber char and caught him and paraded him around shadow bound up. He really took the face stomp in stride.

Contrast to a later plot where there was an invincible ogre-mage that face stomped so much of the player population. Several people so full of themselves and their characters broke into fits and rage quit.

I can't even imagine a lot of this stuff being possible today.

Still a lot of stuff to cause inspiration. I'm going to start suggesting people read this thread for ideas.

It takes flexibility on the part of all players involved, which comes more easily to some than others. It can take practice, but it can be very rewarding on both sides Smile
