The only thing holding these kinds of plots back now-a-days is the idea that you can "win" Shadowgate. Some players get stuck on wanting the best gear, the best class, and being able to take on all comers... but I think it takes a sense of weakness to give your character a fully fleshed out personality. Being able to take a fall, in one sense or another, allows you to create a truly memorable role playing experience.

I don't think its about any of the stuff you mentioned. People are flexible, everybody at least gives lip service to how you need to be willing to lose.

To me its more about a lack of trust. A lot of what you described sounds like it has a lot of commitment involved. Commitment and trust. Trust that the other people are going to still be there next week and four weeks down. Trust that they will go along. Trust in the avatars when they are required. Lots and lots of trust around. That trust just isn't there.

Thats what I meant but maybe with these examples here people will find that trust.

It's the same thing. Most players aren't willing to "let their guard down" when they don't trust their opponent to make life interesting if they do. If you expect you'll get nothing but a KO/hit, you're not going to be nearly as inclined to take a fall.

I could sit here and name almost any plot Loki and Ari/lurue ever ran they are all gold. but The (dream-eatter) plot and klauth locking me in a fishbowl and slowly turning me in to a familiar was great. I had a lot of fun.

I haven't ever posted to the SG forums before, and I don't get to play nearly as often or as long as I would like. Since this thread is here there is something I do want to say about this subject. I came from a mud with a playerbase that breaks 150 nowadays. Played since it first opened, had a great time yadda yadda nine years later. Great game. Its still going pretty strong too. I don't see myself ever going back to it. They used to do plots and stories now and then, but not so much anymore. Mostly just breadcrumbs to feed the starving vets of the game or to excite those who don't know better.

I have never left a plot I could participate in here at SG feeling let down, or not entertained. You guys make me feel like I am actually playing a table top game of D&D, something I have been sorely missing. For that I thank you. I am willing to bet the player base being small may be a bit discouraging at times. I commend everyone for their dedication.

The characters of my fellow players make some of the most developed from my previous game life seem like cardboard cutouts. Your all very fun to rp with even though I have not really had time to flesh out Saresh and make him a good character yet. For those of you I have yet to meet, I look forward to the experience. I hope to be able to retort with the same caliber that I have seen from everyone so far and make rping with me as enjoyable as it is to do with all of you.

I apologize for any lack of coherency. My day starts with about a half gallon of coffee and just escalates from there.

On my first char I was a ranger hunting in the forest where the Yuan-tis spawn and tries to lift the evil magic. Little did I know that the Malarites claimed control of this forest and captured me. Beat me up, cut out my tongue and almost forced me to kill a Unicorn, I was a Ranger for Makalai it whatever the nature god is I forgot how to spell her name.... Anyway I refused so the gouged out one of my eyes and cut off my ears, tied me up and left me for dead in the corn fields. Evil right?! I then crawled to my escape before the crows could eat me and found a Firbolg friend of mine and this really nice bardic girl with fey wings. They patched me up and then went on a war path to avenge me. Eventually I ended up doing a perm death on the char because I was repeatedly PKed for a few days by this anti-paladin and well I couldn't escape him anywhere. So we RPed my final demise. It sucked to die over and over and over and over again, but it was still pretty fun.

Trillet's evil half RP was fun too, but that is mainly because I got to use the term "touched in the head" all the time. Still do from time to time. And well his evil side was kind of fun.

I think that the biggest problem with re-doing a lot of the old plots is changes to the mud.

Characters would have maybe 300 hp at most.

Boss monsters would maybe have a thousand or so HP and would be considered deadly.

It would be really difficult to create a dragon that could terrorize the mud for a week.

I know time and time again I'd create a monster thinking 'boy players will be really hard pressed to beat this' only to see it cut through like butter. Back to the drawing board... repeat...

Takes a lot more time than many would suspect.

I do remember the shadow leadership stuff fondly though. Things that put characters in the limelight and give them the chance to shine without lots of avatar support tend to turn out the best in my experience.

The whole series of events that lead up to the evil leadership in shadow was quite interesting.

NPC rallied the lawful characters together and drafted the laws that would govern shadow as tsarven empire pulled out. There were players that held titles, political intrigue happened. The player-magistrate seized power and really used shadow as an excuse to do all kinds of things. Eventually when the evils took the reigns they upped the anti about how their titles of power entitled them to certain things that they did broadly.

Lots of character who just PKed wherever had to justify the risk of breaking laws and dealing with, what then was almost a certain jail visit.

Well a monster that terrorized a city for a week would need to be smart enough to retreat if more then X number of players fought it at a time to keep it from being overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Thats actually canonically (In D&D at least) one of the things that makes Dragons such a pain. A dragon gets a lair, (Typical plot being Finds kobolds, Kobolds build it a huge trap filled lair. Eats Kobolds. Fills lair with much stronger then Kobold servants.) and from that lair it raids nearby settlements. Whenever it faces an army or adventurers it just retreats and raids an area the army/adventurers are not. Forcing either the strongest knight or a party of adventurers to hunt the dragon inside its lair. (How come a single knight seems to always be able to do what otherwise takes a whole party of adventurers I'll never know)

Also weaknesses are great. There is a monster in the game that seems absolutely overpowered and will easily slaughter a party of 5-6 of the highest level adventurers, unless its weakness is exploited to make it easier. Thats always a good way to sell a monster as "Extremely powerful". Imagine a monster raiding a countryside that can only be hurt by mundane weapons or a monster that can't be damaged unless it is hit with fire or acid damage which renders it vulnerable for a few rounds.
