I think we need class F.A.Q.s for new players. Any of you veteran players want to write a FAQ for your class that the new players can read? |

|
|
Here is my list of FAQ's regarding them thieveses.
Let me know if I got anything wrong or forgot something
/D.
***********************************************
As a thief, what is my prime stat?
It will clearly be Dexterity. It will add both to your AC.
But also the thief skills.
If I use bows, do dex add to damage also?
No. It will only add to your ToHit ... But there is a feat that will add your dex bonus to damage as well.
What about Stabbing with a bow?
You get the 'sneak attack' with a bow. Like if you were wielding a blunt weapon. It will not affect you damage wise.
Does stab increase damage wise dependent on weapon?
Not by a whole lot. I get the feel that it works like the Sneak-Attack where you deal extra die of damage dependent on your level.
Wielding a magic weapon is always important against the critters with damage resistances against non-magical weapon though.
Can I check if my hide succeeded somehow?
Nope. You have to hope your skill-check were good enough.
I know that Athletics helps scramble away from attacks. It it help my scramble stap chance also?
No, for that you need to invest in your Stealth skill. Says in the helpfile also.
I really feel my suitability sucks?
Lower level is a test of your determination of playing that class. It eases up when you get the scramble feat, and even more so if you get the Roll-with-the-blow feat. But playing a thief is a challenge in general.
I found that it has helped me a lot relying on scroll (Stoneskin scrolls in particular. and fireball/meteor swarm scrolls when fighting many).
Also remember poisons, denying the enemies constitution is very powerful!
Only thieves and bards have access to powder now. Very good stun-tool against mobs when the fire gets burning.
Damage resistance feats are also highly recommended. Being a class with relatively low Hps and AC. and no minions. these are almost a must.
And remember you are a thief ... no shame in running, wimpy should be a dear friend of you!
I noticed the poisons. They have weird names but what do they do?
Unfortunately, there are no list ingame to tell you that
I had to test on myself and write down what poison did what.
I highly recommend testing near a healer ... I once had to run nude to the healer as my Strength were sapped and couldn't care anything!
How about traps. Can I use those in battles?
Unfortunately not.
But I have had some success in roaming monsters. planting stunning traps and attacking as they lay entangled. But it is a strategy which requires a lot of patience.
With melee weapons. Should I take weapon finesse feat and use light weapons or go strength and use any weapon?
That is more a question of personal style. In my own testing there are of course some difference in the damage on the single hit dependent on your weapon. But lets face it, as a thief you are not going to slug it out pure melee damage, that is a fight you will loose every time. I tented to use the light-weapons with finesse feat.
Plus weapon Finesse also add your dexterity modifier to damage as well as tohit.
But as the majority of the damage will most likely come from your stabs, it will not have major effects (unless it is those epic dragon weapons of course).
Besides the class-skills, what else is good to invest my skill points in?
Spellcraft. Always useful to be able to throw spells from scrolls.
Healing. Lacking any native healing powers. That skill keeps you going for a good while.
perception. Very useful when having to find those pesky traps. |

I don't have anything to contribute toward this end right now, but it might be helpful to have a forum thread set aside for new player help guides, questions, etc. Basically a place a new player can go to help get them started in the world.
I think Verbannon has worked on some general guides in the past, and maybe somebody wants to write a bit about the world's history, cities, general information about the world any new player would know, etc.
Just a thought. |
