If you look solely at D&D books, then they probably do not and never will match up.

We have taken a good number of liberties to make the game more fun - as in you have stuff to do - and I know that this is still very much a work in progress. We have, by no means, reached a final end goal where we can sit back and say we are done. I do not think that we ever will.

The idea with increased levels is just to make the game more fun from a game perspective - and allow people to continue advancing their characters for a much longer period of time. Code would actually allow up to level 100 characters now.

However, right now level 40 is still the cap. Level 50 will be the cap in time, after we've got stuff to the point where we would like it to be and then can develop some more content/retrofit some of it.

I also recognize that right now there are level segments where it's difficult to find content - or at least more difficult for some people - based on personal knowledge and likely class. Hopefully we can lessen this over time.

In short, I don't really have an answer for that question, other than to say the intention is just to make the game more fun - give players more stuff to do - and some of you might not like more levels, some of you likely will. That's another reason for trying to be more willing to accept different styles of play. Some people love to level, others despise it.

I think eventually players might be able to attain some near god state of being - around level 100 perhaps - we'll see what happens Smile

This is a very important question for consistent RP.

It's also something that most players simply take on board by instinct/general game understanding. If we currently have 40 levels (later potential for more), and no active players can obtain divinity/lichdom/etc unless retired, then your top-end-super-hero-tabletop-equiv is a L40. L20 being half that may be your local badass with semi-renown. Please defer to your common sense here as I'm not sure this is something we really need to, or should, spell out to you; it seems a bit like artificial labelling to me Smile

As Saide said, well... subject to adjustment as necessary whenever more levels are added and/or if we let you kids get any sort of divinity/immortality/etc later on Razz

You can try it. Usually success equals retirement at this point though, for those beyond-mortal achievements (eg/ Durias/Nightfall ascension to demi-godhood). May change depending what we do with higher levels going forward Smile

Even in D&D the way power scales has changed dramatically from system to system. In 2e for instance level 1-10 was pretty much 'average' with 1-5 being the range of standard city guards and militia, 4-7 being what professionally trained and armored soldiers could reach, and 8-12 being the levels of the typical knights and elites. Beyond that with a cap of 20 was when players were expected to be getting rewarded land grants and titles of nobility or taking over thieves guild because at that point their skills became exceptional and rivaled only by true champions. And it had optional rules for levels below zero to represent truly untrained characters and levels above 20 which were when they became epic and in sheer power could rival demigods. 4e is much the same as 2e. But in 3.5 and 5e however plays got considered champion material before even level 10. 3.5 had a balance problem at the later levels leaving power consideration inconsistent. I dont know about 5e.

But in Shadowgate well the best Ive ever figured is that level 1-10 is what would be the negative 1 levels in 2e. Level 11 to 20 the levels 1 to 10 levels, level 21 to 30 the same as level 11 to 20 minus the recognition. and levels 31 to 40 the epic levels.

So if I were to just spread the extra 10 levels among that I would basically just offset each tier by 2 or 3. So it would be first tier levels 1 to 12, second levels 13 to 24, third 25 to 37 and the fourth levels 38 to 50.

Does that seem acceptable to you?

It'd give you a rough ballpark; as Saide said, not everything we have is currently set up for tidy tiers so I'm not gonna confirm you the concrete markers of "L10 makes you average and L11 makes you awesome". TBH feels kinda artificial to my brain. Maybe my brain is weird. I just dun like it Razz

Just as long as it isn't 'wrong' then Ill take it as 'a' right even if not 'the' right.
