Folks,

I have been away from SG for months - essentially back in December of 2017 or early 2018. I honestly do not remember when I stepped away. The game has not evolved or attracted players. It has continued to slowly die. I am not trying to be pessimistic but that is the reality.

I have the code as of today, July 7th 2018, set aside. Anyone (Nienne?) that wants it to host the game, I am giving until July 28th, 2018 to step up.

After July 28th, 2018 the game will be shut down as we currently know it.

I am intending to implement a series of dramatic and drastic changes that will move us away from D&D and into something unique. In my mind it is either do this or die slowly and end up with a very empty server.

This will mean that all current characters will evaporate on the new game. I am talking about a clean break. A dramatic restructuring. Into something different from D&D. In the coming days I am going to be posting on the mud connector (and whatever other forums I can find) to recruit people who would be interested in coding.

I am going to be working on a plan going forward and will post it here or on the other forums soon. The idea is to develop a game that is primarily focused on player features.

I know that some of you will hate this idea and others might love it. This is why I am giving anyone who wants to step up to the plate and host the game the opportunity to do so.

Personally I am looking forward to a brighter and different future for SG - something that we have yet to actually make a reality but something that will hopefully set us apart in the eyes of the ever dwindling text based gaming community.

Thank you all,

Saide.

If you need a box to host old server I have one in London.

However, as it stands I'll be on board with the wipe if it comes and the old world development will depend on someone else. Id love to see it still exists but for historical reasons only. (Later Correction: if certain people ask me to work on it, I will.)

[s]Second, Saide. Give time to consider whether you can implement changes on current server. Consider yourself but don't talk to anyone about it with anyone. Perhaps more people would be on board with radical changes done to their existence in such case.[/s]Okay I've been told why not. Nevermind.

If I can figure out something money-wise, I will gladly host the game in it's current format. I have a job that gives me a pretty steady schedule, so I can also work on breathing life into the current format. I'm not a computer person, really, but writing and stuff I can do.

Heyo. Saide, I'll message you directly, but I'm supportive both of someone taking up the game from its current point, or of you making use of what is here to provide whatever is within your vision, if no-one takes it up. I've always been confident of your ideas and your fairness, so I have no fears of it taking a drastic change if necessary. I'm not in a position IRL to take on the game alone (most are prob aware I've been scarce since around Feb/Mar), this year has been a steamroller of one problem to the next and I need to prioritise my sanity and my family first.

For whoever takes the game on - be that Saide or anyone else - I'm certainly willing to offer what help I might (or just play) once I'm able to reasonably contribute. But I'm conscious that I can't provide the game with the admin it needs right now, so it won't be me taking the helm. Sorry lovelies if that's disappointing but it's where I need to be right now. I appreciate all the support to date and I'm confident whatever incarnation the game moves on to, folks will find something to enjoy Smile

What N said.

My availability is also likely to remain patchy due to RL commitments, but I'm happy to do what I can when I can.

EDIT: I took out a sentence asking for something that I then realised Saide already said he'd done.

As I messaged Saide in-game, I am willing to fund or help fund a server. While I don't want to see the current SG go away, I am fully behind Saide's new vision. Whatever he, and Nienne for that matter, need from me, I'm there. Lets be positive and go into this with a good outlook. I know I am.

As of today, Ketami and Bannic will have the code and driver for the MUD.

I will defer to them about posting when they are going to open it up, an ip address/and or domain name. I'll also need to get to them about the website, but that's probably of the least concern ATM.

On the upside, as this forum isn't hosted with the game, it should remain online regardless of movement. So if there's any downtime in the move feel free to make use of it for communication if needed Smile

As far as the domain goes, it may be worth talking to Octo - I think he owns the current shadowgate.org and may be able to simply repoint it for you once the new location is set up...

Fellow SGers,

After some soul searching and internal debating, as well as talking to a few other people. I have decided to continue hosting the game.

However, I am going to give Bannic and Ketami the opportunity to step up and lead things. I will hang around as a fail safe in the event of something going horribly wrong/breaking terribly. I have no desire to steer the direction of the game.

I believe that my current server has more than enough power to host several MUDS - which means that in due time (probably whenever I get the motivation/will/desire) I will still be launching another MUD with some fairly radical ideas.

This will hopefully allow them to get a feel for how the game is ran while at the same time alleviating concerns related to the technical parts of hosting the game.

It will probably be much later next week before I kick things off by promoting them from there I will allow them free reign to choose who they would want to be immortals/direction that they want to go.

If you would want to be involved with my eventual project either email me at saide.fromsg@gmail.com, send me a private message on here, or find me on facebook - Sam Mary Hurst.

If you want to be involved with the development of current SG and all that will entail then speak to Bannic/Ketami.

Well. I should know better than falling for pep talks done by certain
individuals by now.

I'm quite upset you (all) ended up wasting a lot of my time with your
speeches and convincing followed by silence this week. I'd rather
continue madness being part of Evennia than spending time either on
either new or old mud codebase and experience this again. If you're
builder and reading this post, check them out, Python is objectively
safer, as the definition of safe code goes, than LPC for novice
developers.

In my book game hosted on a home server with no staging or version
control has no chances to be rekindled in 2018. This is a fundamental
issue we had chance to fix 15 years after It should have been done.

You (all) are dead an chose to remain dead not only because of keeping
the flow of 1970s. There is more important point than that one. In
addition to that nobody here prioritizes the issues brought to you by
players, when problems are clear and obvious. Most of you consciously
chose to turn discussions into backstage drama, for the case of both
imms and players, or to develop some useless shit when players chose
to leave the game on the base of mechanics, for the case of anyone who
had chance to develop the game. I'm tired teaching people IRL, I don't
have will to teach you over and over that opinion has nothing to do
with reality, nor I'm going to include objective points in this post.

Ah... Well.

I would have continued with truthful bitterness to point out your
failures but this posts serves another purpose, to give me closure and
opportunity to vent.

Don't waste my time talking back to me. I'm no longer interested.

You are not going to learn and survive.

This post may or may not be sarcastic pep talk designed to force you
act specific way.

umm bye?

The MUD will keep living, and changing, and growing. Hope you have fun where you end up.
