So this got brought up in a different thread and I've been poking at this bear for awhile.
I'll start off with the obvious from the old post, Ryzan is right, there is no sense to city bounties, as they are applied by old code with no reasoning behind it. Raveena threw a sheathed sword at me awhile ago, and smack, Zathery has a bounty.
So that's issue one, both the aggressor and victim get bounties, so how does say an LG sort that mess out going just by the code "ohh look, the evil drow and my best friend have bounties posted the same day, well guess they gotta die even tho I am pretty sure it's because the drow tried to murder him/her"
There is no weight, after a certain point noone cares, the guards cant scratch you and most ppl who eventually get a bounty are either given one without reason or are never in an IC position for someone who cares to attempt to bring to them to justice.
The lists of wanted people are old and clumsy, 150 000 gold for Nightfall? Lemme just summon the powers of Tyr, Torm and Helm to take on a demigod for that measly bounty? If the lists where wiped of characters who dont even exist anymore would be a start, moreover wipe characters who no current PC has any knowledge of (I think I saw a bounty for Dread somewhere not long ago).
Remove beast races from bounty lists and application to bounty lists where they are banned for being a beast, would keep clutter down and if that player is playing the game properly he or she will send up an avatarmail saying they've been murdering Tabor guards and an IC post can be written about it.
Make the bounties actually worth a damn, and im not talking about a reasonable gold sack for taking out the leader of a major crime syndicate. Say someone, lets call him Bob, causes trouble in Shadow and ends up (rightfully) on the wanted list. Who goes after him, the LG paladin 20+ levels over him most likely, but then said paladin gets in problems with the whole still hazily defined levelcheck rules. But if there was actual ingame rewards for it, maybe the NE thief would bring back Bobs head for a 'no questions asked get out of jail freecard'.
The bounties dont work because they are based off the old SG where once you left lvl 6 everyone could PK your sorry butt and noone would care, from a time when 50 000 gold for a reasonably high level evil and criminal was considered a healthy reward. From a time when Korath could call upon the might of Ungrim, Zeal, Lorath and at least 5 other reasonably leveled and established characters to smack around Daelmas, Ijan and others when they got out of line.
And one last thing, I can't remember a time when someones claimed a bounty properly, if Zathery where to show up with Ryzan all bound and gagged in say Seneca, the second the guards see him, they steal him from Zath and haul him off to jail, leaving Zath unable to actually claim the reward without Avatar assistance. And if there where to happen with lower levelled people it could be quite discouraging, "yay i did my part as a good citiz- hey where you taking my catch you bastards!" _________________ Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit,
