But a general cooldown timer on the spell would be real useful. Else the scryer would simply spam the scry spell until he/she is convinced they have the real me ... and we're back at echelon again.

Not if say each scry attempt takes 1/2 of the casters stamina.

I would suggest 2 improvements --
offensive summoning spells for scrying. Scry someone can mean you
get pulled into PK right away for example, so scry at your own risk

Decoys spells. Like the bard telepathy spell which causes your image
to show up somewhere. Maybe if you had a spell that could create a
image that a scryer sees instead ofthe real you

Both really cool ideas Smile

Scrying could always give a temporary constitution penalty for the effort required. Something like -2 con for some amount of time. If it stacks with itself then it will self regulate.

Eevil. It appeals greatly to my licheness Razz

I don't think any of these penalties should apply to mini-scries (clairvoyance etc) as they really serve no purpose beyond location - imo they encourage people to find RP, as opposed to the "watch and don't participate" that scrying tends to be.

I've seen druids scry, They are penalized on their stamina as well.
When they are down to 'passing out'. It means they have to sit and relax for about 20 seconds before they are ready to scry for another 120 seconds or so.

Stamina regenerates fast enough to make such a penalty 'spamable'.

I do love the idea of con drain Very Happy
gives a penalty which is rather critical. But I guess it comes down to how fast it regenerates. If it regenerates at same rate as stamina it easily spamable still Smile

I wholly agree on that Smile

Nobody who spends a lot of their time doing the 'sit and scry' is actually commenting.

Though before I actually made some in-game allies I would sit and scry on occasion. Before I was a mage though instead I used masks to always find where people are so I could join in on whatever RP they were having. When I was told that I was being very annoying doing that I stopped and sat in the Rhapsody all day. Then when I became a mage I found I could scry what was was happening easily and time my butt-ins to be as unannoying as possible. Though now I have allies I can hang out with so I hardly use the mirror anymore.

So looking at how I used it, the Con penalty probably wouldn't have effected me much unless I intended to go dungeon crawling or someone decided to attack me for scrying on them.

I actually like Ares idea better. Scrying has always drained stamina but with it now being based on skills and level don't really see people passing out after 2 or 3 back to back attempts. Point being, what would be balanced for one character would be nothing for another, and render the spell useless for yet another.

I suppose if someone lets their con go to 0 the spell could just cause them to drop dead.

Well... constitution does more than just hitpoints. It also relates to how quickly players regenerate stamina. So at some point, as Nienne would say.. they will have a kip.

With such a big nerf to scrying though, I think something to nerf telepathy's ability to evade scrying should be in order.

I don't think mind-speech abilities really have any relation to scrying...

Well, every time something important and sensitive is to be communicated, anyone with telepathy will use telepathy as a guaranteed way to make sure no one can scry it or eavesdrop on it. But I just suddenly remembered whisper exists which can do the same so uh never mind.

so much talks of mechanics...

Just RP and remember, if someone scries you, it just means you have more of an audience for your RP, plots become thicker, and information becomes more valuable. I remember times when we would talk one way knowing we would be scried, while maintaining telepathy with something completely different..

And if its to protect yourself for the mudsex, then well.. dont RP things you wouldnt be proud of, cause even if you're scry proof.. you're never alone..
