A lot of people talk about 'leveling too fast' some talk about 'leveling too slow' but what is a rough estimate, lets say a range, of what an acceptable leveling rate is?

There is no acceptable rate. That is part of what we have been working to change.

Some people level faster than others and this has always been the case, some level slower.

I personally don't care if you are level 40 in 20 minutes - as long as you are not abusing a bug or cheating in some other fashion.

The point of a lot of what I have been trying to change is to make the game playable by anyone - so if you want to level slowly (you can now turn off exp gains btw) or if you want to level fast you are free to do either.

I would say that a lot of it might depend on personal preference - some people enjoy smelling the flowers along the path - so to speak - others want to hit the finish line.

It is true that a lot of the more deep fun with our game comes from interacting with others and developing meaningful relationships - either friendships or enemies. So a lot of people who have been around for a long time, I think, take this into consideration.

Well you're asking what's acceptable. Admin just said "anything". So that's basically your answer... if we're not holding you to a set rate, no-one else is Smile

While there's no set rate, as a player I personally appreciate characters that level relatively slowly.

For me, it's a bit disorienting when someone arrives as a helpless newbie on one day and is then kicking the butt of areas I've never managed the next. It requires some quick adjustment in thinking how my character should relate to the suddenly-powerful.

For those reasons, I tend to try not to rush too much. That said, I am sure that the progress of my own characters would seem confusingly fast to a complete newbie who is trying to figure out Offestry and the goblin stronghold.

For what it's worth, I tend to think in terms of about 15 days (SG days, not RL ones) to reach lvl 20, but level a bit more quickly after that. That's a personal guideline, though, and not a rule to apply to others.

I'm also aware that other players may have a lot more time to sink into playing than I do (I have coding to get on with, as well as an occasional life). So characters who seem to me to zoom ahead may well have been levelling no more quickly than I did, in terms of online time.

Plenty of people complain about players leveling too fast. So they must have a set idea of whats acceptable. And 15 shadowgate days? I assume by the context of the rest of the post you mean playtime not actual shadowgate calender days.

Where's Tsera? She is the imm that complained the most about players leveling too fast. What did she think was the proper rate?

I mean you can't even have RP rewarded if you can't think of any examples of what counts as good enough RP to be rewarded.

If I was to set the standard I would be like "Levels 1-10 are primarily for you to get familiar with the basic locations of the game and how it works. And locate a few of the popular player gathering spots. As a rule of thumb your character shouldn't pass Levels 11-20 until she has become well acquainted with the player base and current politics of the game and made a few friends or rivals or been recruited into a guild or player faction long enough to become familiar with fellow faction members. Levels 21-30 should take a while as your character starts getting involved, not as a major force but in small ways, before you level beyond this your character should be well established and people know who you are, and what you are about. And levels 31-40 are when you are finally strong enough to accomplish things in the world of Shadowgate and make your permanent mark however you see it. Remember these are just a suggested leveling pace and will not be enforced. And circumstance specific to RP may make a different rate better."

But it doesn't matter what the standard is, a guideline is needed for everything. Even multiple guidelines for the same thing. Guidelines are how you fairly and impartially judge the subjective.

Ts is indisposed. You can forget about her taking an active role in SG for the foreseeable future. Also as I recall, Shar and Styx were the real enforcers of online time and level caps, capping people as low as 8.

Here's a suggestion based off the top of my head:
1-15: quick, 1 calendar day if you want.
16-25: 3 online days
26-35: 4 online days
36-40: 5 online days , 12 total to get to level 40.

Really it comes down to who you are playing with. I found myself constantly playing catch up with people who could log on more so I could party with them.

I still think the best way to get people to slow down is to offer rewards for leveling evenly, and tie it in with the factions system.
