There is something I often hear that irks me to no end. Someone saying "Im no bard" as an excuse to avoid telling a personal story. Thats just bad.

The fundamental social mechanic in both real life and in game RP is swapping stories. And if you arent willing to volunteer personal stories, much less refuse to provide any when pressed. There is no way for anyone to get to know your character.

And imo when swapping stories you should start with stuff that actually happened in game, before reaching to any background stores.

Well, at least, if you know nothing else about the character, you know they're not a bard.

Not everyone, in real life nor in game, is a natural storyteller. In my experience, in fact, a majority of people aren't able to pull a story out of their ass when put on the spot. And some characters simply enjoy their privacy.

It could be argued that at least every adventurer has a story about that one time they got stuck in a dark pit filled with hungry kobolds... but, then, that's a fairly lackluster story because we know everyone else has done that 900 times.

You're welcome to your pet peeves of course, but surely there are other ways to get to know a character through natural conversation, asking questions, etc.. like how normal people do it.

'Oh yeah, that reminds me, one time in boy scouts, my father packed me work gloves instead of warm gloves. My hands were so cold I couldnt even roll up my tent. Man I hated Boy scouts'

Thats a story. This is how normal people do it. And the rest of your post is a misrepresentation of what I said.

"Hey, Im from Alabama where you from?"

"oh Im from Mars,"

"Oh really? I hear they have good weather there"

"No weather really"

"Ha ha well no weather is good weather"

"After getting caught in a rainstorm without an umbrella yesterday, I agree with you. Weather sucks."

"I hear ya brother"

"Calling me brother without my permission is a,deadly inzult. You die now."

"Gah urgh Gurgle..."

Maybe I am misdirecting my irritation. My character shouldnt need to request stories and when he does press for sone kind of reaction and gets refused. Thats what irritates me since the asking directly for a story is an action of last resort. And a refusal basically means the character in question has refused to interact.

The core frustration Is when Im in a room full of people and I feel like the only one making an effort.

That is what I'd characterize as normal conversation, not being prompted to relay a story on the spot. (that is, "that reminds me," would imply there's just an exchange happening). What are people doing if not this??

I must not entirely understand. Sorry! Smile

My advice would be to move on and find someone else to rp with. I personally don't have the patience anymore to participate in rp that annoys me. Very Happy

Generally not doing or saying much at all. Hence why I badically yell at them to 'say something!'
