Since this is a somewhat complicated command, I thought it would explain it better here so more people can take advantage of it. As a player or other immortal, feel free to write up other spotlight posts detailing commands or strategies that will help your fellow players to be more aware of the game.

So prepare works in a few different ways. You can either prepare spells one at a time by doing..

prepare sorcerer level 1.. this prepares 1 level 1 sorcerer spell or..
prepare mage magic missile... this prepares the magic missile spell

You can also do..

prepare sorcerer level 1 times 100.. since you can't actually cast 100 level 1 sorcerer spells, this will prepare your max level 1 spell slots

prepare mage magic missile times 100
same deal, fills your level 1 spell slots with magic missiles

You can also add your spells to a prepared list that you specify, which you can then prepare all at once, without having to remember every spell that you want to cast. Now, the syntax for the prepared lists is a little bit cumbersome, but you can get around that by using aliases. For example..

prepare add combat mage magic missile
prepare add combat mage stoneskin

Instead you could make an alias ..
alias add prepare add combat mage $*

after which to add a new spell to your mage combat list you just have to type.. add meteor swarm

and to remove a spell..
alias remove prepare remove combat mage $*

You can keep multiple lists with slightly different spell configurations, so you could have a lot of buff spells prepared in one list for example, if you're going to be in a large party.

You can now easily copy the full contents of one list to another with a different name using prepare copy combat mage to buff mage

Then once you have your list copied, you can create a second alias to add or remove things from it...

alias add2 prepare add buff mage $* add2 warriors constitution
alias remove2 prepare remove buff mage $* remove2 meteor swarm

Now, you can fill out your entire spell list just as if you were preparing them one at a time, you can even alias a command to view a list of spells that you have prepared.

alias list prepare list combat mage
then the command <list> will show you all the spells in your combat list
alias list2 prepare list buff mage
<list2> then shows you all of the spells in your buff list

To prepare a whole list you could do
alias prep prepare prepare combat mage
then prep would prepare all of the spells in your combat list.

I've never used the prepare list because I'm old and stupid, but more probably because I just keep track of what I've expended in my wonderful brain. However I am curious about it, though I gotta ask for clarification about it.

Lets say I have 5 spell slots in level 3, and my prepare list is 2 of X, 1 of Y and 2 of Z.

I burn my Y and Z spells. If I hit my prepare list command, will it go top to bottom and fill in another 2 X and 1 Y, thus messing up my setup spell preference for my level 3 slots, or will it take into account I still have both X spells still prepared?

It will fill in the missing spells only. I'd also recommend looking at help buff if you haven't played in a while.
