Would it be acceptable for players to compile a guide for newbies that would perhaps help put them on a more even playing field. Including things like favored places to gain exp for every level, the equipment players tend to trend toward, other secrets and tips that an experienced player takes for granted (the best way to gather gold, spells selected by sorcs, etc)?

And if so, would anyone be interested in working on this with me?

I think this would be acceptable. You might try to avoid any potential game ruining secrets. I mean I am not against the idea of guides in any form really, I just frown on the idea of those which say "go here, do this, with specific details" - I think ones which make suggestions, point out areas (without explaining secrets in them), and stuff like that are good. It might also help us to realize areas where we are deficient.

I personally think we need some more variety in lower level areas for exploring and alternative gear - it's just that I also realize this is not going to be fixed over night. But any other insights that such guides could bring, would be useful.

I also think it would be very appreciated by those who are new and are not sure what to do/where to go/how to actually advance.

I played one mud awhile back where you got gear locations every so many levels so you'd know how to upgrade your gear - this is something that is probably very much taken for granted by experienced players that is very difficult for newbies. I don't really like the idea of telling people exactly where stuff is, but hints of general areas - IE this place is worth exploring for potential gear at level 10 - would be appreciated.

Thanks for responding Saide!

As far as gear is concerned, could we say something so specific as (SPOILER ALERT!) "Many players look for a ring of protection +2 in the Kildare area. Don't forget to look up!" (I can edit this comment if it went too far!) Laughing

Remember, the purpose is to create a somewhat even playing field against us players who have been playing for ages and know exactly where to go and what to do. I think it's fair to say that nobody even pretends like the world is brand new from character-to-character, anymore.

I don't think that is too specific at all.

Heck I don't think it'd go to far to list gear

Ring of Protection + 2 (Kildare Area)
Sword of Kicking Ass + 1 (Feyren Farm)

Just because that's not specifically saying that the sword is located on "george" who is hidden 12 rooms south, etc. etc.

And I think it would be helpful for people who simply don't know - and while I know that some of the fun actually comes from exploring and figuring things out (for some people anyway) - I feel like there's a difference between that and having no idea of how to advance your character's gear. And hell SG is much larger now than it was when I started playing and it was easy for me to get lost then with no idea what I was doing. I imagine it's probably worse now since most people are probably used to playing a visual game where they can see visual clues which make figuring out stuff much easier.

This talk about gear is another reason I'd like to expand the random treasure stuff I had made awhile back (Ares and I had added some random stuff to it) but this way people could just go to about any area and stand a decent chance of getting some gear that they could use or sell. Right now it just needs to be expanded.

Cool, thanks!

I might reach out to a couple of people specifically for their ideas, but would love to hear from just about everyone about where they tend to go as they advance, and what equipment they seek out (the more class-specific, the better), and then I'll work on compiling something based on everyone's thoughts. (I know we all hate paperwork but I think it would be a shame to rely on just MY opinions! Smile)

Please feel free to PM me here or send me a mud mail if it's easier (Jysibyll).

We all know ShadowGate is the best mud in the whole world. Now if only we could attract and retain new players, that would be GREAT. I hope lending them a hand as we're able could help in that regard.

PS. Saide, the equipment you included in the newbie tutorial is incredibly helpful for lowbies! I'd even suggest having a donation box where we could leave this and that for our young players, but I know that's probably taking things a bit far. Another idea might be to set up an NPC that allows them to trade in the newbie gear for something slightly more advanced (or that just adds a + to things) - or a few various ones placed in out-of-the-way places that might encourage players to explore (or attach some small quest, etc).

The existing guide is actually more specific than even that.

http://shadowgate.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=2828

It needs to be updated to account for the changes in offestry. I had intended to have a guide for each of the four base classes through level 20 (with level 10-20 less specific than this), but I'm not able to work on it. More than happy for players to pick this up as it really will take a joint effort anyway. Use this as a starting point and reference and I'll be happy to add in updates after they're cleaned up.
