So it came to my attention about an hour or so before this post that someone came to try the game out and was unhappy about something another player was doing at the time, they quit and posted on our ad to try a different game because of this. I am less than pleased with that outcome, but that doesn't matter, this shouldn't happen.

Eh, gave this game a whirl. If high-level psychopaths getting their rocks off by stalking and intimidating new players is your thing, at least go for a mud where there's a larger playerbase, like Armageddon.

I have a short list of people I'd suspect in this. And people wonder why new players don't stick around

......Whaaaaaaat the hell is wrong with people? I honestly can't even think of who would harass a new player like this. And I guess that's a good thing because it means I trust yall are fairly decent folks. Apparently I'm wrong though! Mad

Are we sure it wasn't someone coming to interact and the new player felt overwhelmed. It could also be they showed up while my plot was going on. I think as players we need to do a better job of letting newbies have their thing and highbies theirs. We have a few players who still believe SG is 2002 and like trying to spread RP with catch and release, but the newer player base hasn't had their skin thicked like older. I truly havd a hard time seeing abyone do this even the ones that are pk heavy

Really I'm not sure, I haven't gotten a reply from this guy yet, so unless whoever knows that did can explain what happened, it made them go out of their way to suggest another game from it.

There's also just the very reactionary nature of a lot of people on reddit in the first place... if it didn't meet immediate expectations it's quite possible some sorts would just react this way, unfortunately.

I understand what you mean Nienne but this person is not like holypicklez who just slammed SG whenever he ran out of meth or whatever every week because he was butthurt beyond repair. I call this a legit complaint because the person in question only posts every week or so and things seem constructive, I take this seriously after all so I do my homework. With that said, here is the account of the new player:

I'm tooling around newbie town, doing the quests offered by the magical lump that familiarizes new players with gameplay. Stopped for a break in the tavern to heal. The character in question teleports into the tavern and immediately starts talking to me. IC, this is problematic to my character, for a few reasons.

This guy is obviously a powerful magic-user of some sort and he just zeroes in on the new arrival and claims he wants to chat? The tendrils of shadow energy or whatever they were curling about this dude make it obvious that he's not not a good person. There are two possible narratives here and they both suck for me: "evil wizard seeks hapless adventurer" and "creepy dude looking for a date/victim". All I want is to get away from this guy as fast as possible without seeming rude and, if possible, making myself seem utterly uninteresting and not enjoyable to pursue.

We exchange names, make a few seconds of small talk, then I make an excuse to leave and book it out of there. I head to the library in the newbie town and research the name I was given. They've never heard of the guy. Great. So, I've either been given a fake name by a shady guy who "just wanted to chat" or I've made the acquaintance of a powerful and evil magic-user who has managed to go undetected (or both) by society. If it's the latter, three guesses as to how he deals with people who know he exists and the first two guesses don't count.

OOC, he thanks me "for the RP" over the OOC line, which is how I know my character was given a fake name. For my own edification, I look his actual name up at the newbie town library and find out he's a blatant psychopath. Great. Whatever character arc I might have been interested in following has now been transformed into being this guy's victim. Also, he has my character's actual name, so he's always going to be able to teleport right to me without problems.

"Dark fantasy" is a very different thing from having your first real experience with another player on the mud make it clear that you're now nothing but fodder for the power fantasy of some guy
I don't recall the exact name now, but it started with a "V" and was about 5-6 letters long.

Forgot to mention something in my previous reply to you: I'm pretty sure he was grilling me to try to figure out if I was a genuine new player or just a new character of an old player, asking about my opinion on things that I didn't have the faintest clue what they were. I recognize that sort of behavior from other muds.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now this is the players feedback on their first experience in the realm, personally I'm on the fence about this, for me "It's great someone is rping with me and I don't even have background yet, so I'd prolly just go with it." but also it's a little bullying the little green adventurer before they've even seen a room outside of Offestry, For a person new in mudding in general having that would probably be like wtf is going on? I'm just trying to make my guy not hungry anymore, to, is this guy gonna kill me or what?

Granted any older players of SG would probly jump on it, depending I guess, it could be frowned on to get cornered while your still a single digit level, so who knows.. this is just how it is and hopefully we can progress positively.

Yep. That was me.

I was half-wondering if they were talking about me since very few tend to travel to Offestry to interact with newbies, but I also know that I didn't go there with any hostile or threatening actions (other than the appearance of my character).

There was no interaction beyond a conversation in the bar. Yes I did "zero" in on the new arrival OOCly with the intention of giving them someone to roleplay with as it was likely they hadn't seen another player at all.

As far as asking opinions on things not knowing what they were, it was the Threads (Kassius plot) and their nomads that had just been in Offestry. I asked this person, ICLy, if that is why they came to the town. Something to talk about IC.

I am a bit taken aback by this reaction, but I suppose I understand being threatened by the appearance of the character.

There was definitely no bullying or stalking or anything else like that. Just a genuine attempt to show a new player that roleplay exists here.

Even in the newbie's own account, it doesn't appear Vaser did anything wrong. I even thought about taking a trip to Offestry next time I see a newbie log in but now I'm not so sure Smile

There was some talk on the lines earlier about adopting a policy banning non-newbies from visiting Offestry.

The reason for this is that since the (semi) recent changes, with the masses as well as the objects to change attributes, and the general containment of the area, it feels more like an ooc tutorial rather than an actual part of the greater world. I can understand why someone might be caught off-guard by a seasoned player suddenly showing up for roleplay.

Another thought was that we should at least agree to ask any newbies online whether they'd like visitors for roleplay.

Any thoughts?

Newbieland ban might be a good idea, I was thinking the same sitting here. Then I realized that it also might not be a good idea, because what if someone wanted to scale down and travel with newbie. It is the 1st experience of SG for true newbies and I'd like to see it be a good representation. I think perhaps making it were you could travel there.

I'm okay with the asking or the ban truly, but I'm do find new generation of players spoiled by the easy of MMO's damn you WoW.. I didn't have a newbie area when I started, I had goblin stronghold and getting stabbed by people!

Way back in the day only HMs could travel to Offestry for this reason. Dude was a bunny and they saw a big scary PC. You gotta let the bunnies feel comfortable in your garden before you start feeding them rabbits.

Even if your there for good/helpful reasons they may see you as a threat because they just started and your like level 10000.

I was stuck in Offestry for weeks on my first character because of a bug, and the one highlight for me (besides getting that fixed) was when an old man came to chat with Sadie in the tavern. I loved it, but he had to leave soon for OOC reasons.

I guess the better thing is to not use intimidating characters. Which, now that I think about it, I went to Offestry as Liz to try to talk with a newbie who didn't seem to want to... might have done the same thing.
