I love the paladin class. But due to changes in the game, it's almost never played. There are probably many reasons, but I wanted to address just one. It might bring interest back to the class.

The help file for paladin says only four races can play one: human, sun elf, gold dwarf, and one of halfling's (braveheart?). That means only humans can be evil paladins, or antipaladins. Why?

I've read a ton of books that take place in many different settings where certain deities have them and many different races are involved. Maybe it's just the help file that needs to be addressed? Additional races added? It's an easy fix to just send up a character request. I'm just not sure why Drow, Centaur, and some other evil races are restricted.

A secondary thought in this idea of mine came about because back in the day, you have to be a cavalier and squire with a paladin. That meant real RP with actual players. So you can imagine, with our low player base, that didn't last long.

Why don't we use the Sword Quest code to create a Paladin quest? One with a good path and an evil path? That would make it more a superficial change than a mechanical one, I think. would even be willing to assist in being a part of this code alteration! I have ideas and thoughts about the different locations one would/should go, what they would/should have to do at each location, etc.

I have played an antipaladin in the past and I LOVED IT. But I don't like playing humans and I don't like the good races. This might just bring back the class to the game.

It's a good thought. An expanded set of races that could play paladin or antipaladin would be fun. I remember a Drow Cavalier character that was a lot of fun, named Itzldorleyl. I was disappointed it seemed to be a one-off character and didn't come back.

Even in some of my plots, I've made Spider Knights of Lloth. Think Drow Antipaladins of Lloth riding on spiders Smile

We used to have the old Deku miniquest in the graveyard Chapel to corrupt a Paladin into an Antipaladin back in the old days. I could absolutely see a mechanical process by which a Cavalier converted to a Paladin. But it's not really necessary at the moment because Paladins are now a base class.

In Shadowgate history I have been tantalized by 5 unfinished quests, where you come across really awesome lore that is never actualized into an area (because areas are shit ton of work). #1 is the unfinished story of what happened to Soren's twin in Kildare Glen. #2 is the unfinished Castle in the Dark Marsh of Dallyh. #3 is the unfinished Tower of Rakatan on Dino Island. #4 is the unfinished story of the Monolith Project described in the Arcane Tower of Sanctuary.

#5 Happens to be Courtesy of Grazzt -- good luck on getting this done Smile -- unfinished but would be awesome! This is the quest demanded of all Paladins, as shown in the quest room of the Paladins Guild, left over from the old days:

The passage reads:

There are three deeds the Gods have requested of all Paladins throughout the mortal realms. Once these deeds are completed you will be granted the power to remove the Holy Cross of Might. These deeds are

1) Destroy the evil demonic being which plagues the realms known as The Krykoth.

2) Prevent the evil Drow from freeing Lloth from her home plane in the Abyss through the destruction of the Nodeus.

3) Travel to the Abyss and defeat the evil Demon Queen Lloth and her minions.

I also want to mention there is a mechanical way for a cavalier to become a paladin, if I'm not mistaken.

Basically you need to take the questing sword from the cavalier guild to the temple of your choice and 'dedicate to' deity.

In the old days, the requirement was that you had to have avatar approval and complete your squire quest. And then you could have permission take up the questing sword.

I think that mechanic is still available, only you don't really need permission to do it now. But it could be a great player driven RP for those interested to do a squire plot.
