Right now the lib code for rooms possessed of permanent scry wards is not there. So for everyone who wished scrying was nerfed I suggest you sign my petition to have the creation of this lib code added to the TO-DO list!

I remember in the old forum (R.I.P) that there was a big thread about how op and overused scrying was. And that this was never brought up in that thread.

Please hold on this request Verbie... like I said, I don't know if someone has implemented room-based scry wards since the last time I was asked, and I don't have the means to check from here as I can't log into the mud from this compy and have been flat out for time all week due to work hours. Lib code for it may or may not exist, I really don't know - I just know it didn't exist last time I was asked Smile If it is the case that it doesn't yet, I'm sure it's probably desirable, but also probably not top of the to-do list when there's other balance issues and long-term outstanding code; really depends on someone having the time and inclination to get to it.

Either way, we've been aware for some time that it's something players want and it's been on the list for a while, if it hasn't been done already. So there's no need for a petition Smile

That may be, but I said I was going to sign a petition over the private messages and by golly I meant it! It would make me a liar otherwise.

*Verbannon signs the petition then starts picketing.*

It used to be there were 2 ways to scry.

1.) Magic mirror: it was,
a.) Very expensive
b.) Could only be cast by mages

2.) Listening shadow: it was
a.) Only available to priests of mask
b.) Not very subtle

I would have to double check the code but I believe no scry can be put into a room. I don't know how well it works as I've not tested it. I think also there might be some issues with detect scrying and block scrying.

This sorta reminds me of 'no invis' rooms that we used to have. Those didn't last long because it was a rather hard blow to sneaky types. A similar issue could pop up with static no scry areas.

The bigger issue IMO is the proliferation of scrying vs static scry blocking. Adding the economic inflation that has taken place after the few years and now a good portion of the player base can scry all they want without it costing them much of anything.

Finally, I'm of the opinion that scry wards should be prohibitively expensive and not permanent.

No invis rooms would be pretty cool if they only dispelled invisibility and not hide in shadows. But with scrying being such an easy thing to do for anyone. It seems to me that it wouldn't be a crushing blow to scryiers for there to be permanently warded rooms. People aren't going to stop talking outside of them and it can't be worst then telepathy spells.

And I guess by 'expensive and non permanent" you mean it should require regular recasting at a high price. Why?

Wait a sec! This thread was just supposed to be a joke! I don't want to actually discuss it.

I guess it still need some discussing.
Even I appriciate the irony verbbie, you falling into your own joke trap Very Happy

But I for one got so very tired of always been perma-scryed without having a chance ward against it.

I can understand the quintessential need for magic users to be able to peer into crystal balls... but it does detract from shady deals and other avenues of RP. If it was on some kind of internal timer, where you could only use it once every day, to give the spell some IMPORTANCE instead the magical equivalent of flipping through channels on a tv, then I'd be much happier.

I think perhaps some of the scrying abilities might need to be nerfed or have some kind of built in consequences to using them like a TV.

Cooldown is one possibility but that seems like a heavy hit to someone trying to play a seer or diviner type character.

Perhaps cooldown could still be used in those instances, but shortened. Or uses per day increased. Even as a diviner or a seer, the ability to peak in on other people should be a "special" ability, not something that can be done ad nauseum.

Somehow all that is less extreme then just rooms that are permanently warded against scrying?

Well the scry counter measures are weak. Even the psion damage
against scry person isn't deadly enough to cause careful consideration
of consequences. High level scryers just plow right through defenses
without a care.

I would suggest 2 improvements --
offensive summoning spells for scrying. Scry someone can mean you
get pulled into PK right away for example, so scry at your own risk

Decoys spells. Like the bard telepathy spell which causes your image
to show up somewhere. Maybe if you had a spell that could create a
image that a scryer sees instead ofthe real you

I really like those ideas Smile

Especially the decoy ability would be real cool!

Would make it possible for me to actually play a thief again, without constantly having people commenting on my actions when I try to plot something.

But a general cooldown timer on the spell would be real useful. Else the scryer would simply spam the scry spell until he/she is convinced they have the real me ... and we're back at echelon again.
